There’s something about walking that unwinds worry. As I trotted along today (at quite the clipping pace!) I practiced emails I had to write, conversations I wanted to have, stories I wanted to write in my head. Trying out different approaches, shifting words, adding bits and taking bits away.
The fragrance of a wide hedge of pencil pines pulled me back into the moment and I crossed the road towards the park, diverting from my usual route just a smidge.
Tiny treasures were all around. Tumbles of friendly daisies opening, greeting the day. A single fluffy frond of pampas grass, dropped by another walker. Gum nuts sprinkled like spilled peppercorns. A jumbled carpet of bronzed leaves. Footprints. Paw prints.
Wattle birds snuck about the green canopy. A black dog lumbered in the distance.
I sidled up to a bench that looks out over the grass and trees. Just for a minute, I sat looking up into the grey sky, letting my focus blur, slowing my breathing, wondering what else was out there beyond this little patch of the world. Wondering how everyone else is going.
Heading for the usual path home, I passed a lady with an orange backpack, a man with a grey beanie, a man running in baggy, shuffling sweats.
There were workers digging up the road ahead, so I took a right turn and headed up a quieter street, then along another. I passed bundles of twigs tied with pink string, a googley-eyed puppet on a fence, clumps of red hot pokers, that lemon tree.
Across the road, quite close to home, a familiar older man was walking his familiar plaid-coated older dog. He waved and I shouted “good morning!!” and the dog said “rawrrrr-oooh”.
I bolted up my driveway, bolstered by the interaction, climbing the stairs, jostling keys in door, heading inside for that perfect first cup of tea.
What happened next? There’s no page to turn... 😉🤗💜
Love these bite-sized morning snapshots so much Pip. What a wonderful idea. Thankyou! And now I'm off for a walk too!
